TASERs And Stun Guns – Are They The Same?

We often read headlines in the news about a police officer using a stun gun on someone. Very often, in fact most of the time, the headline is wrong. The officer probably used a TASER device on a suspect and not a stun gun. The terms “stun gun” and “TASER” have almost become interchangeable.

There are many differences between stun guns and a TASER that you should be aware of if you are looking for personal protection devices for self defense. Most people think that a TASER and stun guns are the same thing, but they are not. Knowing the differences will help you make a wise decision on which device is right for your personal protection.

When a stun gun is used for self defense it is very effective in stopping an attacker about 85% of the time. Sometimes, if an attacker is is really high from drug use the effects might not be enough to disable him. The voltage of the stun gun is a factor also. If the stun gun has a low voltage it will not be as effective as quickly as a higher voltage unit. When a TASER is used for self defense purposes the attacker will be disabled along the same lines as if they had been shot with a 9mm gun. Almost 100% of the time a TASER will disable an assailant without causing any permanent damage.

The voltage rating of today’s stun guns runs the gamut from around 200,000 volts to advertised ratings of 3,000,000 volts. That is a lot of electrical energy going into a body!. The reason it does not kill someone is because a very low amperage is used to push that voltage into the body. The TASER device on the other hand introduces about 50,000 volts of electricity but uses a higher amperage to force that voltage out and into the body of an attacker. A stun gun has an impact on the nervous system. The TASER effects both the nervous system AND the muscular skeletal system, which has a bigger effect.

A TASER will permit you to remain about 15 feet away from your attacker and you will still be able to use it. With a stun gun you have to be very close and the stun gun must come into physical contact with the assailant.

Stun guns are relatively inexpensive and can usually be purchased for under $100. They can be found in many different sizes and models. TASERs cost at least several hundred dollars and come in several different styles. You can purchase TASER with laser sights, flashlights, and more. They are the most effective way to disable a person without causing them permanent damage or killing them.

Size is another difference with TASERs and stun guns. Stun guns can be tiny and as small as 3 inches so it fits in your hand and is easily hidden. Other stun guns may be up to 9 inches tall. Some models of TASERs are the size of normal handguns and you will hold them as a handgun and even pull a trigger as a handgun. The newer C2 TASERs fit more easily into your hand and do not look like a gun at all.

When choosing your personal protection product remember these differences. TASER equals almost 100% effectiveness while the stun gun gives you about 85%. Price – expect to pay much more for a TASER then you will pay for a stun gun, at least triple the cost. You can keep your distance from an attacker when using a TASER. Up to about 15 feet. With the stun gun you have to get up close and personal with an attacker and discharge the stun gun while it is touching them.

When it comes to deciding which self defense product to buy, keep in mind that both the TASER and the stun gun will increase your chances of avoiding becoming a victim. There are differences but they both work to keep you safe.
