Another important thing to do is to make sure that you get more than one quote for comparison purposes. You should get at least three quotes from different building companies. Also, ensure that the quotes show exactly what work the quote is for so that you are not taken by surprise by so-called hidden costs.

Once you have decided which quote to accept, and bear in mind that the lowest is not always the best, ask to see details of the building companies insurance. It is essential that they have adequate public liability and professional indemnity insurance in case of accidents or if you are unhappy with the standard of work.

Even if the whole process runs smoothly, always ensure that your budget allows for unforeseen costs which are quite likely to arise. Finally, have a legal professional take a look at the contract to make sure that everything is covered in the contract so that both you, and the builder, are covered against any unpleasant surprises.
