We have all heard of the risks linked to smoking cigarettes, but what are the dangers of cigar smoking and are the risks just as serious, or more so? Well, according to the National Cancer Institute, regular cigar smoking can result in a major health threat as scientific study has associated cigar smoking with cancers of the voice box, lungs, esophagus, and the mouth. Newer research also suggests that cigar smoking may be strongly linked to the development of cancer in the pancreas. Lung disease and heart problems are factors to consider as cigar smokers are at much greater risk of developing these issues, according to physicians.

Apparently, regular smoke inhalation appear to dramatically increase the health threats to individuals that smoke cigars. Nonsmokers are eight times less likely to develop oral cancer than someone who smokes three to four cigars a day. Smoking the occasional cigar is still undetermined, however, it does seem clear that smoking cigars on a daily basis will pose a serious risk to your health.

Many individuals wonder if cigars are as addictive as cigarettes and why, for instance, so many more people actually become addicted to cigarettes, as opposed to cigars? Truth be told, all tobacco products can become addictive as they contain the addictive chemical nicotine in them, and this includes smokeless tobacco as well. Products such as chewing tobacco contain nicotine, which cause people to become addicted to smokeless tobacco as well.

If nicotine is so addictive, why don’t more cigar smokers smoke less often? It appears that for several reasons smokers become less addicted to cigars. The most obvious reason is that the nicotine is inhaled much more superficially than in regular cigarette smoking, causing less nicotine to be absorbed by the body. The other reason is that cigars are still viewed by most as a luxury item, and are not as readily accessible as cigarettes are. However, if frequency of use increases, cigars can become just as addictive as cigarettes, and will actually pose increased health risks to the user in comparison to cigarettes.
