In order to grow a successful home based business in the network marketing industry, one must develop and show leadership, even while working autonomously from home. With most network marketers and home business owners now talking with business partners all over the world, knowing how to establish and exhibit your leadership is crucial.

Your successful home based business in network marketing will only ever become such if you become a leader in your team and even in your industry. So how do you do this?

1. Know your stuff.
Knowledge, skill and attitude are what people look for in a leader and a successful home based business owner. Cover the knowledge and skills part by learning all there is to know about your industry and business. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t show leadership in the process – knowledge is not everything, and realistically, who knows everything? Team members and potential partners alike will look for your initiative and problem-solving skills when looking for your leadership. Show them that you can get the answers if you don’t already have them and commit to supporting them in learning and sharing new knowledge and skills.

2. Be proactive in sharing what you know and have.
As a leader, if you have found the secrets to building a successful home based business, your role is to share them with your partners so that they can replicate your success. Their success will actually validate and reinforce your leadership: they followed your advice, experienced success, and are now confident in your ability to lead them to victory!

3. Be available for your partners.
Leadership is no selfish business. While you build a successful home based business for yourself, your partners will expect their leader to also focus on their success and provide guidance, teaching and support. You can be there for them in 2 ways: direct/interactive or fixed/passive. The former is when you are providing direct assistance upon request from a partner; promptness and effectiveness in your answer to those requests are key. The latter way is to create resources which are made available to your partners or anyone at any time without your involvement, for example posting resources or articles online, or subscribing your followers to training email series.

4. Increase your presence online.
When you present yourself online, you are able to portray yourself in 2 positive lights: the leader and the expert. By making your valuable content widely available online, you can contribute to your industry or network while exhibiting your skills and knowledge. Your online presence can be a real advantage when potential partners research you online; if they find someone who has plenty of rich and useful content all over the web, they will feel that they have found a true leader who is likely to help them replicate his successful home based business for themselves.

5. Find a niche for your success and leadership.
Being successful will help you be a leader, to state the obvious. However, this is not a time constraint to begin your leadership! You do not need to be the best at everything or overall, or the most successful home based business owner in your industry before you can be a leader. Start early, and focus on the areas where you are confident and thriving, or your existing strengths. Don’t delay, one must start somewhere! With time, you will find that your leadership will grow with your success.

6. Have a leader attitude.
No one wants to follow someone who is a quitter or is lazy, especially not in business. When looking for a leader, your potential partners will search for someone who displays enthusiasm and optimism, a can-do attitude with problem-solving skills and a collaborative approach, as well as tenacity, focus, perseverance and passion. Not sure this is you? Well I say ‘Fake it till you make it!’, because the more you act like a leader, the more you feel like one. Not only will these attitudes help you develop your leadership skills, they will also help you in building the successful home based business you want for yourself and your fellows business owners.
